beautiful creature

.

There is a beautiful creature
Living in a hole you have dug.
So at night
I set fruit and grains
And little pots of wine and milk
Beside your soft earthen Mounds

And I often sing.

But still, my dear,
You do not come out.

I have fallen in love with Someone
Who hides inside you.

We should talk about this problem--

Otherwise,
I will never leave you alone.

—Hafiz

  2. I think Hafiz here is talking as the Sehri Hour (an hour before dawn). It is a special hour known in the muslim faith where prayers are answered, the grace of god is more "tangable" and spiritual secrets are unraveled, openings and breakthroughs happen. This is what he probably means by these 'gifts.' I think he is speaking as if He is God, playfully inviting His beloved servants (human beings) to let their soul come out. The part they hide behind or inside their ego. Have you every heard of the word Kafir, often translated as unbeliever, it literally means those who cover the/their Truth.

God sings or calls in this Hour, every night:
"Is there anyone who is asking for forgiveness so that I can forgive them, who is in distress that I may relieve them, is there anyone who needs anything that I may give it to them." And this continues till the morning.

There was once a Sufi man on his wedding night who kept repeating ana (me) till the morning! His bride complained in the morning to her parents of the crazy groom. He clarified, he heard God asking (the questions above) and responded me me me!

For context Hafiz was the spiritual sheikh (master/upbringer) of Rumi the great Muslim Sufi jurist, scholar and poet.
