question

.
You ask why I make my home
in the mountain forest
and I smile, and am silent,
and even my soul remains quiet:
It lives in the other world
which no one owns.
The peach trees blossom.
The water flows.

dear friends
.
Practice until you see yourself in the cruelest person on Earth, in the child starving, in the political prisoner. Continue until you recognize yourself in everyone in the supermarket, on the street corner, in a concentration camp, on a leaf, in a dewdrop.
Meditate until you see yourself in a speck of dust in a distant galaxy. See and listen with the whole of your being.
If you are fully present, the rain of Dharma will water the deepest seeds in your consciousness, and tomorrow, while you are washing the dishes or looking at the blue sky, that seed will spring forth, and love and understanding will appear as a beautiful flower.[..]
You too are a tree. During a storm of emotions, you should not stay at the level of the head or the heart, which are like the top of the tree. You have to leave the heart, the eye of the storm, and come back to the trunk of the tree.
Your trunk is one centimeter below your navel. Focus there, paying attention only to the movement of your abdomen, and continue to breathe.
—Thích Nhất Hạnh

The now is our self.
We are not present in the now.
We are the now.
The now is not a container that contains our self along with everything else.
It is our self, eternal presence.

questions
.
You said, ‘Who’s at the door?’I said, ‘Your slave.’You said, ‘What do you want?’‘To see you and bow.’‘How long will you wait?’‘Until you call.’‘How long will you cook?’‘Till the Resurrection.’
We talked through the door.
I claimed a great love and that I had
given up what the world gives, to be in that love.‘You said, ‘Such claims require a witness.’
I said, ‘This longing, these tears.’You said, ‘Discredited witnesses.’
I said, ‘Surely not!’
You said, ‘Who did you come with?’
‘The majestic imagination you gave me.’‘Why did you come?’
‘The musk of your wine was in the air.’
‘What is your intention?’
‘Friendship.’‘What do you want from me?’
‘Grace.’Then you asked, ‘Where have you been most comfortable?’
‘In the palace.’‘What did you see there?’
‘Amazing things.’‘Then why is it so desolate?’
‘Because all that can be taken away in a second.’‘Who can do that?’
‘This clear discernment.’‘Where can you live safely then?’
‘In Surrender.’‘What is this giving up?’
‘A peace that saves us.’‘Is there no threat of disaster?’
‘Only what comes in your street, inside your love.’
‘How do you walk there?’‘In perfection.’Now silence.
If I told more of this conversation,
those listening would leave themselves. There would be no door, no roof or window either!

To sing is to begin a sentencelike “I want to get well."
I am not born for nothing

Heaven never wept

Let me imagine that we will come again
when we want to and it will be spring
we will be no older than we ever were
the worn griefs will have eased like the early cloud
through which the morning slowly comes to itself
and the ancient defenses against the dead
will be done with and left to the dead at last
the light will be as it is now in the garden
that we have made here these years together
of our long evenings and astonishment—W.S. Merwin

impart(ial
Heaven and Earth are impartial;
they treat all of creation as straw dogs.
The Master doesn't take sides;
she treats everyone like a straw dog.
The space between Heaven and Earth is like a bellows;
it is empty, yet has not lost its power.
The more it is used, the more it produces;
the more you talk of it, the less you comprehend.
It is better not to speak of things you do not understand.

.
What I like about the trees is how
they do not talk about the failure of their parents
and what I like about the grasses is that
they are not grasses in recovery
and what I like about the flowers is
that they are not flowers in need of
empowerment or validation. They sway
upon their thorny stems
as if whatever was about to happen next tonight
was sure to be completely interesting.—Tony Hoagland.

no leaders, please
.
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself,
don't swim in the same slough.
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself
and
stay out of the clutches of mediocrity.
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself,
change your tone and shape so often that they can
never
categorize you.
reinvigorate yourself and
accept what is
but only on the terms that you have invented
and reinvented.
be self-taught.
and reinvent your life because you must;
it is your life and
its history
and the present
belong only to
you.

supposing i dreamed this)
only imagine,when day has thrilled
you are a house around which
i am a wind-
your walls will not reckon how
strangely my life is curved
since the best he can do
is to peer through windows,unobserved
-listen,for(out of all
things)dream is noone’s fool;
if this wind who i am prowls
carefully around this house of you
love being such,or such,
the normal corners of your heart
will never guess how much
my wonderful jealousy is dark
if light should flower:
or laughing sparkle from
the shut house(around and around
which a poor wind will roam

Taking Care of Anger | Thich Nhat Hanh (short teaching video)
.
What keeps us alive, what allows us to endure?I think it is the hope of loving,or being loved.I heard a fable once about the sun going on a journeyto find its source, and how the moon weptwithout her lover'swarm gaze.We weep when light does not reach our hearts, We witherlike fields if someone closedoes not rain theirkindnessuponus.—Meister Eckhart

true nature
.
We are a wave appearing on the surface of the ocean. The body of a wave does not last very long - perhaps only ten to twenty seconds.
The wave is subject to beginning and ending, to going up and coming down. The wave may be caught in the idea that ‘I am here now, and I won’t be here later.’ And the wave may feel afraid or even angry.
But the wave also has her ocean body. She has come from the ocean, and she will go back to the ocean. She has both her wave body and her ocean body. She is not only a wave; she is also the ocean.
The wave does not need to look for a separate ocean body, because she is in this very moment both her wave body and her ocean body. As soon as the wave can go back to herself and touch her true nature, which is water, then all fear and anxiety disappear.
—Thich Nhat Hanh

this is how the wind shifts
.
This is how the wind shifts:
Like the thoughts of an old human,
Who still thinks eagerly
And despairingly.
The wind shifts like this:
Like a human without illusions,
Who still feels irrational things within her.
The wind shifts like this:
Like humans approaching proudly,
Like humans approaching angrily.
This is how the wind shifts:
Like a human, heavy and heavy,
Who does not care

more than mirage
.
Although most are totally nakedand too scant for even the slightestcolor and although they have no voicethat I’ve ever heard for cry or song, they are, nevertheless, more than mirage, morethan hallucination, more than falsehood. They have confronted sulfuricboiling black sea bottoms and stayed, held on under ten tons of polar ice, established themselves in dense saltsand acids, survived eating metal ions. They are more committed than oblivion, more prolific than stars.Far too ancient for scripture, eachone bears in its one cell one text—the first whit of alpha, the firstjot of bearing, beneath the rilingsun the first nourishing of self.Too lavish for saints, too triflingfor baptism, they have existedthroughout never gaining girth enoughto hold a firm hope of salvation.Too meager in heart for compassion, too lean for tears, less in substancethan sacrifice, not one has evercarried a cross anywhere. And not one of their trillionshas ever been given a tombstone.I’ve never noticed a lesseningof light in the ceasing of any oneof them. They are more mutablethan mere breathing and vanishing, more mysterious than resurrection, too minimal for death.

a poet reflects

The sky said I am watching
to see what you
can make out of nothing
I was looking up and I saidI thought youwere supposed to be doing that
the sky said Manyare clinging to thatI am giving you a chance
I was looking up and I saidI am the only chance I havethen the sky did not answer
and here we arewith our names for the daysthe vast days that do not listen to us

blueskythinking
.
Just off the highway to Rochester, Minnesota, Twilight bounds softly forth on the grass. And the eyes of those two Indian ponies Darken with kindness. They have come gladly out of the willows To welcome my friend and me. We step over the barbed wire into the pasture Where they have been grazing all day, alone. They ripple tensely, they can hardly contain their happiness That we have come. They bow shyly as wet swans. They love each other. There is no loneliness like theirs. At home once more, They begin munching the young tufts of spring in the darkness. I would like to hold the slenderer one in my arms, For she has walked over to me And nuzzled my left hand. She is black and white, Her mane falls wild on her forehead, And the light breeze moves me to caress her long ear That is delicate as the skin over a girl's wrist. Suddenly I realize That if I stepped out of my body I would break Into blossom.
